BRITISH POLITICS.
(Press Assn.— By Telegraph.— Copyright.) LONDON, April 12. ';
Crowds accorded Mr Asquith an ovation <>n his arrival at Dover and London. He immediately visited Sir H: Campbell Bannernian.
The Spectator vigorously warns Mr Asquith against pursuing old age pensions m the new Government, as it will destroy freetrade to discharge financial obligations. ; ■ The Daily News says that Lord Curzon stands for a large modification of the fiscal system. If Curzonism is not exactly Balfourism to-day, the chances are that. Balfoiirism will tie Curzonism to-morrow. Curzonism is not protection or retaliation. It is a specious proposal to broaden the basis of taxation for revenue purposes only, to keep freetraders . within the party, to relieve tlie wealthy from direct taxation, and to provide funds for social reform. The Daily News protests against the broadening basis, which raises the cost of living t o . the poor. \
