Rain was general in Canterbury throughout Thursday alight and yesterday morning-, the. fall being sufficiently heavy to give the land a soaking that will do much good to grass and feed crops. At the Police Court, James Geddes, licensee; of the Oouglas hotel, was charged before Mr Widdpwson, S.M., with unlawfully permitting drunkenness on his Hfeehlsea premises, arid with selling liquor to persons already in a state of intoxication. The case was dismissed, on the ground that there was no evidence that the person obtained . the liquor which made him drunk at the hotel in question. The Magistrate said| however, this case emphasised the prevalence of juvenile drinking. It showed a deplorable state of things in regard to the young men of Dunedin and to the young men of the Dominion. / The annual meeting of shareholders in Messrs Kempthorne, Prosser and Co.'s New Zealand Drug Co.- was held to-day. The chairman, Mr Bathgato in, moving the adoption of the ropOrt and balance sheet, said the reserve on customers' accounts was £2992, and the fire insurance reserve was £605, an increase of £303 on last year. The chairman explained that he thought the fire cover was fairly satisfactory and every opportunity was taken to increase it. the source of safety from serious disaster lay in the fact that tke cover extended over eight different? risks. George Holmes, alias Albert Patrick. Newman, pleaded guilty to havinp forged the name of W. Stuart to an authority for J. H. Kirk and Co. to pay George Holmes £15, and having uttered the same to John Brookes. Accused was remanded for sentence by the Supreme Court.
