After careful consideration of the tariff thc French Chamber of Commerce at Sydney communicated with the French Government, suggesting retaliation. MELBOURNE, August 23. A deputation of timber merchunts asked the Minister for Customs to give increased protection to Australian timber. The admission was made that Queensland timber was not so suitable as New Zoaland pine for butter boxes. A suggestion was mado that reciprocity should be arranged Avith New Zealand so that pine could be admitted free m return for Australian hardwoods being placed on the New Zealand free list. Another deputation asked for concessions m connection with the boot and leather industries. Mr Bailey, of Sydney, hoped the duty m skivers would be retained. If tins' was done his firm would remove its plant at present m New Zealand to Australia and start manufacturing skivers. Mr Chapman promised to consider the matter. PERTH, August 23. A producers' conference, representing the agricultural interests of the whole , State, adopted a resolution favoring secession from Federation, condemning the tariff and the increase of members' allowances.
