The raising of the duty on cast-iron pipes will cost the Petone Borough Council £750 as the difference m tne price of pipes for its sewerage scheme. The Otago Harbor Board lias decided to approach Parliament with a view to secure the passing of an Empowering Bill enabling it to borrow up to the extent of £100,000. An extraordinary story has been given to the -Colac (Victoria) police by P. E. Stokie, a dairyman of Neering. Stokie states that on reading of the murder of Mr Bauer, the Melbourne diamond merchant, he remembered incident which took place at Flemington racecourse m March last, when the Australian Cup was run. He made- a bet on that day, and won. On the following Thursday he again attended the races, and a one-legged man approached him, and after congratulating him on his win, asked hini how he got away with the money. He replied that he had placed it m the Commercial Bank. The man then said: "Will you join us? We are working up a plan. We want a.jeweller to dispose of the goods." Continuing, the man said : "Where did you carry the money you won? In your breastpocket? That is where the diamond merchants carry their diamonds. You .will ; hear of sensations m Collins-street shortly; so, if you want to join us, don't say anything. It is to be completed before the Grand National, and it will take a knock to do it." Stokie said, "What are you going to do?" and the man replied, "If you come and pledge yourself with us I will tell you, but not otherwise. I am going to Sydney with my pals."
