Tne Marine Department acknowledged the Board's letter accepting their offer m regard to Tuahine- Point to put up a light if tho Board would maintain it, and stating tliat a sum tc provide for erecting: the tower and furnishing the light would be placed on the Estimtacs this year. — It was resolved to request the Department to push on the work, as an urgent one, as soon as possible. The N.Z. Shipwreck Relief Society wrote asking the Board for a yearly dona, tion to their funds. Ttiey were approaching the various Boards m the colony m a similar way, and the Government had recognised their object by assisting them. It was desired by the society to raise a fund sufficient to meet any serious shipping calamity that might happen. — Capt. Tucker thought the society was a deserving one, and the matter wee held over pending further information as to the objects of the society and the assistance granted by other Boards. A letter was received from two "workmen named .Marin and Barney, wlio stated, that they were getting Is l_d an hour or 10s for a day of nine hours. They had asked the overseer for an increase, but had been refused.— Tlie Board decided that they cquld nob interfere between, the Overseer and the men engaged by him. Th Jarrah Timber Co. wrote enclosing their .trade pamphlet with a, view to bringing tho value of their timber under the notice* of the Board. Mr W. B. Mackie, engiueer on the John Townley, reported tnat the dredge macliinery was working satisfactorily. He offered to make a complete set of tracings from Mr Marchanls plans of the outer harbor for £7 10s, and if blue prints would do for £5. An offer to do the work for £10 was made by J. D. Lilley, ■! architect.— -Mr Mackie's offer was accepted. The harbormasters' and overseer's reports were read. ' j > The ovresee* said the explanation he de- : sired to make was this, that m giving , the time as eight months he might say t that they would be working under the j water, and the time owing to this arid « other reasons might be longer. — The {Chairman said this agreed with the overseer's statement at last meeting that the . proposed work would probably take 12 j months. Continuing, the Chairman said ' he did not want any great work done m the river, but he thought the dredging should go on. It could be stepped at any time. In every, harbor m the colony the y had dredges at work. — Mr Lysnar: But ( they have harbors, not a ditch. You can go on, and I will riot stop you.— The' , Chairman : Plenty of places would be glad of such a 'ditch.' It has answered" our purpose well.— Mr Lysnar : It' cost us £388 ? 000.-^-Mr Matthewsbn was of the same opinion as Mr Lysnar, but they lxad threshed it out at the election and had been -licked.— Mr. Lysnar said he and Mr Matthewson. had recorded their protest and it could go on. • "
