MOUNT RUAPEHU.
(Per Press Association.) TAIHAI'E, this day. Old residents m the vicinity of Ruapehu are not m the least exercised over the supposed trouble at Ruapehu, and Mr Peters, a resident of Waiouruo, says when a district was isolated little or no attention was given to such indications of activity as reported Inst week; but now the population is increasing the natural indications of activity excite alarm. A scare, he alleges, is without justification. He visited the crater lake some time ago, and was satisfied that a mild eruption had taken place. In confirmation of that opin. ion he saw ash a few days ago on the southern mountain low down ; m fact, the mountain was always snow-capped. The ash deposited over the while mantle made the change all the more conspicuous. Sensational rumors are m circulation that the coach passengers had seen flames accompanied by loud reports, issuing from the mountain, -but the drivers, interviewed, denied having observed anything beyond a thick vapor resembling a dark cloud. A party left Waioura on Wednesday to make the ascent of Ruapehu and investigate. They experienced bad weather after leaving the mountain house, and journeyed on foot, reaching the snow line. . Continued bad weather deterred them from making further investigation, and they retreated. From observations gained, a gentleman who formed one of the parly was satisfied a disturbance of no serious nature had occurred, either vol. canic of thermal. The colony can rest m peace that old Ruapehu's belchings are of the mildest nature. Those who made the aisoent were Dr. Patterson and Mr A. Paterson of the Government Life Insurance Department
