He. promised to give the Cawdor memorandum a fair trial. The Laborites' amendment regarding the trade union rate of wages was withdrawn ou assurances that the Government accepted: the principle, though they must consider the differencea between dock yards and outside work. Votes as to pel*, tionel and wages were agreed to. The National Zeituiift states that owing to Sir H. Campbell Batmermau's South African policy tho desire for self-govern-ment m the Transvaal has become a passion. It m felt preferable for the Boers to have a say m the management of that colony tlian to go on under present conditions. Messrs Dolan aud Hazleton, Nationalists, have been elected for North Leifrim urid North Galway unopposed. To 1 Mi* Kitfion's .coming free trade resolution, Mr P. Snowden; Labor menjber for Blackburn, moves an amendment, declaring' that neither free, trade nor pro. tectiou will enable the country .to solve the great -problemi of poverty. . Mr W. H, Lever, member for'Wirral. nwves that it is urgently required that . mombera of the House of Commons should receive £300 a-year, and that all returning officers' charges should be paid out of^rates.
