AUCKLAND, last night. The annual match Auckland v. 'Para naki was played yesterday at Alexandra. Park m the presence o"f 9000 people. Auckland lost the toss, and played v he first spell against wind and sun. Tiio local team liad none the worst of it despile the odds against them, but Taranaki scored through a penalty kick for a breach, Glenn placing a nice goal. In the second spell Taranaki's defence was called upon, particularly m the last 20 minutes. Auckland lost two of their best forward's, Gallagher (wing) and Nicholson, and though substitutes came on the forward play was affected. The Taranaki defensive play was very solid, and though Auckland eagerly attempted time after time to get over, their opponents succeeded m staving the attack* • if, and the whistle sounded without alteration lo the score. The Otago-Canterbury football match was played to-day m fine weather, and on a good! dry ground. Bennett, Hislop and Mitchell stood out of the Otago team. A strong southerly breeze gave Canterbury the advantage m the first spell, and a good attack was maintained. Harper kicked a goal from v mark, and converted a try by Deans. Just before half-time Otago got on a series of rushes, and Portepus scored. Booth kicking a goal. Otago were attacking for the greater part of the second spell, and tries were scored by Gilray, Booth and Porteous, the last-named converting all three. Otngo won by 20 points to 9. The visitors' forward's showed a great amount of clash, and though lighter than Canterbury beat them m the scrums, and had much the best of the game m the second spell. The back play was disappointing, very little- passing being seen, and numerous mistakes were made.

BRISBANE, Aug. 27. At football New South Wales defeated Queensland by 8 points to nil.
