NEW MARKETS WANTED.

SPEECH BY THE PREMIER

Speaking at the meeting of fcho Oliristchurch Chamber of Commerce ©n Wednesday, ,the Premier said that, as head of the Government, he fully appreciated the time the Chambers of Commerce de^ voted to matters concerning the general intea-ests- of the people, and the service rendered by them- to the country. They had also done good service for the Government. The Chambers had practical knowledge and .'experience, .-.and any requests made by that Chamber, or ' any otlier 1 m the colony, would have the earnest consideration of Ids Ministry and .him- j self. At the present time the question of the export of their products was causing him some anxiety. They produced 1 the best, but the difficulty was to' get the best market for it. When they went carefully through the- commerce and exports of the neighboring colonies they would find them sending large quantities of products which they m New Zealand were able to producej , to different markets, while New Zealand sent none. The question naturally arose: Why should not New Zealand get the .trade? The trade he referred to was that of the islands on the way from Australia to India, and also tliat of India itself. Why should not the Chambers of Commerce take up this business? Exception had been taken to the Government interfering with individual enterprise, but if the (Jhamfoers of Commerce took tip the question of trying to open these markets, aad recommended some persons for -appointment- to carry out the work, he would be prepared to recommend Cabinet to help the Chambers ~ of Commerce. ■ ' . ■ ■
