MOTU NOTES.
Tile wood-chopping sport lias wot lost its attraction so far as Motu is concerned. Liisfc Friday (although very inclement weather) there were a good number of persons present to witness a handicap match between the following 1 persons: MiWns J. McKenzie (Rakauroa), P. Smith (Wliakarau), ' W. Wright, A. Coward, W. Read, and F. Read (Motu). It was evident from the start that, a very close finish would be the result. The time was 3 mm 5 sec for ani 18 inch block. Mr W. Read, who started, at scratch was first, with A. Coward second, and J. McKenzie* third. The finishes all being very close. The handicappers were Messrs J. Hansen, Tv Abberton., T. Tyreman. Mr fc. Calvert acted as judge. On Friday evening a concert and dance was held, but owing to. the very inclement weather the attendance was not as large as is would otherwise have been. During the evening light refreshments were provided by Mr-- C. Hansen. The musicians were Messrs A. Gardiner and W. H. Harker, while Mr J. Hansen acted as M.C. ■■.'■'
Mr A. Coward has received a reply from Mr .W. Hursthouse, Engineer m charge of the Road Department, Wellington, that the district road engineer at Napier states that he is able to go on with .the formation of Whakapaupokihi road into Messrs Coward!, McDoflai'd and C. Niekle's land, a distance of about two and a half miles. This is encouraging news for the settlers interested.
Mr E. J. Eiliss, of Motu, is interesting- himself m the formation of a rifle club, and already has succeeded m ob-. taining 17 promises from persons willing to join. , .. \
