LAST NIGHT'S NEW ZEALAND NEWS.

♦_ (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last night. A young man named Thomas Joy was drowned at Taupiri this morning. He was getting logs from a- creek for a sawmill arid slipped into the water. The body was recovered 20 minutes after, but all efforts to revive life failed. The following are the facts of the Pukekohe anthrax case: — Five* head of cattle died between the 10th and 16th inst. on Mr C.Latimer's place, at Pukekohe. Mr Latimer came to town on the 16th, and Mr Halstead, veterinary, went up on the 17th. He was asked by the Auckland Inspector of Stock to take up two slides and bring smears to the office, which Mr Halstead did. on the 18th. These were forwarded on the same day to Wellington. Messrs Clayton and Hull (Government veterinarians) went to ' Pukekohe on the 18th, and made all enquiries possible. Another heifer died on the 20th. Messrs Clayton and Britain, who visited Pukekohe yesterday, found the dead heifer. A post mortem examination was made,' and the case was unmistakeably anthrax". In all a bull, a heifer and two pigs have died on Mr Latimer's property since the' 10th inst. The placet is now m quarantine. Information has been received that at the Waihi Grand Junction mine a bore hole being put down from the chamber at the 500 ft level penetrated 40ft into the reef, and that the first assay gave an average result of £8 10s per ton. This development is of the utmost importance, as it proves that the Waihi reef system is continued into the Grand Junction urea below the lowest point hitherto worked m the latter company's property. HAWERA, last night. Frank Whiting was to-day committed for trial on- a charge of perjury arising out of a recent licensing case. WANGANUi; last night. At a public meeting to-night resolutions approving of Bible-reading m the public schools, and requesting Mr Willis, the local member, to support -Mr Arnold's Bill, were carried. WELLINGTON, last night. The Rev. James Paterson, who has resigned charge of St. John's Presbyterian Church after 35 years' ministry, was to-night presented with a cheque for £347 by his congregation, and with a valuable piece of plate for Mrs Paterson. The Appeal Court was engaged to-day hearing the dispute between the Corporation of Wellington and the owners of the Albion Hotel, over a strip of land two feet wide, which the former claimed as part of the street. After considerable argument the Court found it liad not sufficient facts before it, and sent the case back to the Supreme Ceiut. The next case was a quarrel between the Lower Hutt Borough and the City of Wellington as to the payment of the latter's share of the cost of the new bridge over the Hutt. The Governor issued a commission, which defined proportions to be paid by local bodies interested, but the Corporation pleads that the city is too far away to have any direct concern m the undertaking. The bridge is seven miles and a-half from the nearest part of the city. The case turns on the meaning of "adjacent" m the statute, and whether the determination of the Governor is conclusive. Judgment was reserved. BLENHEIM, last night. The representative football match, South Canterbury v. Maryborough, resulted m a win for the visitors by 13 points to nil. The visitors outclassed the local men m the back department. CHRISTCHURCH, last night. Indignation succeeded surprise when it became known at Lyttelton to-day that Dr. Upham had been dismissed m connection with the Gracchus' visit. His extreme conscientiousness m the discharge of his duties is widely recognised. Dr. Upham would divulge nothing. It is understood, however, that he first visited the Gracchus m his private capacity as medical practitioner, and diagnosed a case on board as smallpox. He at once communicated with. Dr. Finch, the chief, who agreed with the diagnosis, and took the directions deemed necessary to deal with the situation.
