LINER SUNK OFF NEW YORK.
I — — ■ A PASSENGERS SAVED, BUT 100 MAIL BAGS LOST. NEW YORK, April 8. During a heavy fog in New York Bay this afternoon the British freight steamship Joseph Mevryweather ran into the starboard side of the Atlas liner Allegliahy 30ft from the bow. The Alleghany was from Port Limon with '34 passengers, 12 of whom were women. Her cargo shifted, and the vessel immediately began to settle. Captain Haase lowered the boats, in which were placed the women passengers and the ship s stewardess. Some men wanted to jump into the bay, but the ship's officers restrained them. The tug Coastwise, which arrived opportunely, picked up the women and rescued the men and crew, numbering 55. The captain tried to save 100 bags of mail matter, but was .unable to do so before the Alleghany settled on the flats off Liberty Island. The passengers lost all their effects, including their jewellery. The Joseph Merryvyeather escaped with a damaged bow. The Hamburg-American Company bought the Atlas Line a year ago, but the Alleghany still flies the Atlas flag. Her upper works are above water, and her passengers were able to step from the rail' to the tug.
