A Router message from San Francisco states that the Maripoen. brings news thai a tidal wave and hurricane devastated the Society Islands on January 13th, killing a thousand natives. (Reoeived February 10, 9.3 a.m.) SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 9. It is feared that Uie Friendly Islands' disaster is worse than, that at the Sooiety Islands. Eight hundred deaths, occurred at Hat> kikuera and Marakau alone. Eight whiles were drowned. Only those who climbed tall trees escaped. The French are provisioning Fuamotue and other islands. AUCKLAND, this day. The Manapouri brought news from the Friendly Islands to January 29, much later than tlie tidal wave reported by cable. The Friendly Islands evidently escaped. News lias been received here from tin Cook Group to January 14, and it is evident these islands also escaped the tidnJ ■wave.
