The Summer Technical School for tea.chcrs, whicfli it is suggested shall be held at different centres m the colony successively, was opened at Auckland to-day. A serious fire occurred at Hastings this morning, resulting m the destruction of three sliops m the nmin street, occupied by J. P. Johnstone, fruiterer, W. Read, bootmaker, and W. Comvay, boot factory. The dwellings attached to Johnstone's and Conway's shops were also destroyed. The insurances on Johnstone's stock and furniture were £150 m the South British, on the building (owned by Schaeffer) £250 m the London, Liverpool and Globe. Con way's furniture and machinery were, uniusuml. The building (owned by J. Collins and T. Dolbel) was insured for £150 m the New Zealand and £120 m the Alliance. Read's stock and furniture were uninsured . MANGAWEKA, this day. Victor Carter, who pleaded guilty to forging Mr .Seaton's name to <\ cheque for £5 and cashing the same with Father lii.croix, was committed to trial. Other charges were adjourned, as one of the presiding Justices was interested, and it was doubtful if the case could be gone on with. CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Walter Ernest Rose, a local commission agent and stamp dealer, was committed for trial yesterday for having broken into the office of C. J. 'fryer, a rival stamp dealer, and stolen a. quantity of postage, stamps of the total value of £200. The licensed victuallers largely attended a meeting held yesterday, and resolved that every member of the trade should strictly cany out the licensing laws, and that to avoid any possibility of illegal Sunday trading m future hotel-keepers would decline, to serve travellers with drink. It was also resolved that a circular be issued to eveay member of the trade ftrictly urging (hem to uso- every legitimate effort to prevent- the slightest breach of the licensing laws occurring m their respective houses. A special committee was appointed to- Vim- that the above resolutions are carried into effect. Ah Yee and Lini Chun, charged with importing opium without a permit and with being m possession of un-Customed opium, appeared m the Magistrates' Court this morning. Accused, m their evidence, contradicted each other. A fine of £100 was inflicted on Lim Chun.
