CORRESPONDENCE.

WEEKLY HALF-HOLIDAY. {To the Editor of the Herald.) Sir, — It is rather surprising tluit this public question Ls not' settled m the usual manner. I suppose it is because it still lingers m the mind somewhat as a private matter; it has barely raiched the complete public -stage. Is there airy spechU reason why it should be the exception to the rule— the rule of the majority? I can confidently assert that an overwhelming, majority of the community are m favor of Saturday instead of Thursday for the half-holiday. If the Borough Council are m doubt abo"ut> it they can try a i^ferendum, but I think they might for once assume that they ore acting according to the wish of the majority and give Saiturday^ a twelve months' trial, at the same time declaring Friday market day. I know the change is supposed to be detrimental to small shopkeepers, but that is not a matter for fancy, but of fact, to be proved by experience, and I verymuch doubt whether experience will uphold the fanoy. It is easy enough for , firms to make Friday pay day, many . large firms at Home do it for the convenience of. their employees. I feel sure, sir, that you would publish the "Herald" at noon on Saturdays. Anyhow, the matter is m a rrutshell, why should a small minority rule on a public question? — I am, etc., ASSISTANT.
