TOWN EDITION.

Messrs Mackrell atid Colley have secured the contract for the extension of Messrs Dalgety and C'o.'s wool store. Messrs Dalgety and Company have received the following cable from London : "Since our last telegram tallow in general is unchanged. Demand chiefly for low and inferior descriptions." A meeting of the Coronation Celebrations Committee, and all persons interested, is called for Monday evening, to decide upon the form the local celebrations shall take. The following old age pension claims were dealt with by Mr W. A. Barton, S.M., this morning : Alfred Charles Tibballs, granted £18; Tamihana Teketeke, Te Naera Otutu, Pera Huka, Ema Hamure, Kere Hape, Hoani Ngapuhi, Hori Borikota, and Maata te Ruahine, renewed at £18 ; Kinii Kahu, renewed at £16. Cr Giuliani, at the Cook Council today, ..brought up the question, of getting metal to Makaraka by the railway from Kaiteratahai, instead of carting it from Potulahi. Cr King suggested that quotations be obtained as to the cost of delivering gravel at all the depots- along the line. It was decided to obtain, quotations from the traffic manager. The St. John Ambulance Association's nursing course is advertised in another column. The course is open to all ladies, but only those who have passed in first aid are eligible to go up for examination and certificate. The course will comprise five or more lectures and several practices, and 'embraces the sick-room, infection and disinfection, details of nursing in practically all its branches, and the application of local remedies. At the Magistrate's Court, this morning William McNight, who was recently arrested up the coast, was charged with, on July 5, at Auckland, having received money to the amount of £1 10s from. Mrs Tobin, and that he did fraudulently fail to account for the same. Accused pleaded guilty. Sergeant Siddels stated that there was nothing against McNight, who seemed a hard-working young fellow. Hi.s Worship remanded accused till to-mor-row for the Probation Officer to report. Messrs Crawford and Son will have on exhibition to-morrow a fine collection of scenic photography, mostly local views, which bring out in. a very striking manner the varied picturesque attractions of the district. Mr W. F. Crawford, with true artistic eye, lias chosen beautiful subjects, and the results of his work form an excellent advertisement for the place. Some splendid pictures are those of Gisborne and suburbs which have been taken with a telescopic lens. Mr Crawford re-* cently submitted some sample views to the Tourist Department, who were making up a collection for presentation to Lord Rothschild, and the whole were at once accepted and forwarded. Cr Tombleson, at the Cook County Council this afternoon asked if the. Railway Department could not be approached in order to get the train to stop at more places on the run' from Ormond to Gisborne. A petition, was being circulated in favour of a, stoppage being made at the Xiii Ora Butter Factory and another had been sent to Welington in support of the train pulling up at the Makauri SclreoJ. crossing. Settlers at these places objected to the distance they had to travel before reaching a station.—A councillor suggested that the train should stop whenever an intending passenger held up his hand. (Laughter)-.—The Council decided to recommend the Railway Department that stoppages- be made at three road crossings as follow : —Kia Ora Butter Factory, Makauri School, and the Wae-renga-a-hika Road. The offer made to the Council by Messrs Webb and Sons for a lease of the Point foreshore is a good indication of the scarcity of land in the vicinity of the wharf and Post-office for business sites. Anyone looking back cannot fail to be struck with the vast difference in values that has taken place in city properties during the last few years and the very large number of new buildings erected and industries established. There can be no suggestion that Gisborne has approached anything like its zenith, and, with the additional impetus which must be given by the railway and wharf extension, there can be no doubt that prices of land in suitable localities must advance very considerably. The business sites to be offered by Messrs Williams and Kettle at their property sale on Saturday, August 2nd, afford an opportunity of acquiring what must prove to be very valuable business sites, and from inquiries already made, we hear they are likely to be very keenly competed for.
