LUNATIC ASYLUMS.
(Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day.
From the annual report of the- Inspec-tor-General of Asylums, it appears that the number of insane persons in the asylums on December 31, 1901, was 1119, being an increase of 101 over the previous year.
Inclusive of Maoris, the proportion of insane tv the population is one in 300, and one in 286 exclusive of Maoris. The percentage of deaths- among the insane was 6.41, as compared with 5.61 for the previous year. The percentage of recoveries of the admissions was 42.17, as compared with 39,64 for the previous year. The average cost per patient was £20 16s Hid, being a decrease of 12s s|d as compared with 1900.
