PRISON ADMINISTRATION.
SERIOUS ALLEGATIONS. (Parliamentary Reporter.) . WELLINGTON, this day. The Petitions Committee of the House has commenced an enquiry into the. petition of Mr E. G. Jellicoe, of Welling- j ton. praying for an enquiry into the prison administration of the colony. The chief witness is "Dr." Brown, who was in 1895- sentenced to fifteen years' hard labour for abortion, but has now been discharged, on account of his health, having completely broken down. Dr. Brown, it is reported, alleges that through an accident in Wellington G-aol lie sustained paralysis of the louver limbs, ithile engaged in the work of carrying' bricks, which, he complains, was far too; heavy, and should not have been given him. He was then removed to Auckland, where he alleges that instead of being treated as he should have been he was treated by the gaol officials as a malingerer, and they went so far as to endeavour to trap him through the medium of another prisoner. This man, as soon as he was discharged, after serving three years, was given a position in the Sixth Contingent, ] [ and sent to South. Africa.
The evidence is expected to be of a sensational nature.
