Owing to the severe weather the hatches were, oat tened down and an accumulation of gas caused a severe explosion, which blew the covering off the hatches. The boatswain was badly burned. AUCKLAND, this day. An explosion of gas occurred in a. house*, in Franklin road on Sunday night. The house was owned by Mr D. Parker and occupied by a widow, Mrs Davies,, and family. A strong smell of gas was found in the front rooms. James Turner struck a match, which caused a, great •explosion, which smashed the glass in the front windows and blew the, baywindow clean out, besides, doing other considerable damage. George Williams had his face and hands burned. Mrs and Miss Davis were also burned. - None, however, were very seriously hurt. LAUNCESTON, June 23. A severe earth tremor occurred on Saturday, lasting half : a minute. Windows and pottery rattled. No damage, was done.
