MELBOURNE, Dec. 27. .The Englishmen m their match at' Bendigo, made 341 m their first innings. ' Quaife carried out his bat for 73. Bendigo had lost five wickets for 88, Murray 28 and Hales (not out) 31 being the principal scorers. In the match "Victoria v. New South, Wales, Victoria m their first innings lost nine for 291 runs, the scores being: — McAlister 89, Stuckey 1, Armstrong (not out) 135, Worrall 0, Hastings 0, TrumMe 4. Layer 21, McMichael 20. Noble got most of the wickets, Clarke failing to corns off. Armstrong showed fine, vigorous hitting, and gave only one chance. He scored many fours. CHRISTCHURCH, last night. Downes and Geddes made a useful stand for Otago ,the seventh wicket falling for 109. Wilkie! then gave a brilliant j display. He was never m trouble, and made runs m first-class style. He was ably assisted by Williams, who played a valuable if lucky innings, the result being that Canterbury had to get 309 to win. After a poor start, Sims and Ridley made a nice staud, but of the others Calloway was the only one to show any form, and at the close of the day's play Canterbury still required 195, witjt three wickets m hand. WELLINGTON, last night Although their batting yesterday was of the poorest description the Wellington men rose to the occasion to-day, and scored more than a creditable win over Hawke's Bay by eight wickets. With 155 to get m their second innings, they lost Gore's wicket' without a run. being scored.. Richardson and Midlane — a veteran of a hundred, fights, and a youngster still m his teens — then defied all the bowling for an hour and a half, and practically made tie" game secure. Midlane hit freely, and placed 59 to his credit before jumping out to a slow one and getting stumped. Trott tried all the wiles at his command to separate them, without avail, and did not secure a wicket. After Midlane, Richardson and Tucker carried on. the scoring, and no further wicket was lost. Neither Midlane nor Richardson gave a chance,, but Tucker, at 19, was badly missed at mid-on off Trott. The visitors were handicapped by the loss of their wicket-keeper, whose hand was disabled, and 21 extras figured m the total. The scores were : Hawke's Bay, 109 and 100 ; Wellington, 54 and 157 for two wickets. MidJane, scored 59, Richardson (not out) 45, Tucker (not out) 32. Dent got one) wicket and Ongley one. In the Hawke's Boy second innings Hales secured three for 20, and Tucker four for 40.
