Cronje led all the way with a fine stride, taking the hurdles beautifully. Won by eight lengths. Time, 3min 17 3-ssec. On tote, £224. Div., £1 19s. Maiden Scurry, of 10 soys; for all horses that have never won & race of any description ; minimum weight 7.7. Distance, J-mile. 8 0. Rena and liunui got away first, Ikatere showing up next, the rest close up, bunched. Whips were drawn* as the straight was reached. This I order was well maintained all down the straight, when Slapjack came strong m the last few chains, running between the two leaders, and: won by a neck. On tote, £251. Time, lmia 2sec. A protest was entered on the grounds that the race was started at the, five-furlong post, instead of the four, but it was dis-
missed. A further protest against Slapjack on the grounds of having won a previous race was lodged. No direct evidence was tendered m support. The stakes and tote investments were impounded pending inquiries. District Race Handicap, of 30 soys; 2nd horse 5 soys. District, from East Cape to Whangara. One mile. 76 Mr J. H. In front of the stand, Killarney led the field at a cracking pace, Yacca taking command before the bend was reached, Stockville third. At the second turn The Drone led by a nose, Killarney going up mth back stretch, Stockville third. At the far bend Malcolm shot, out, quickly assuming a lead of ai length, Stockville closing up to Killarney. All whips were out m the straight, old Malcolm winning by 15 lengths, a iength between second and third, The Drone fourth, Stockville fifth. Tote £323. Tune, lmin 49 3-sth sec. Div., £3 16s.
