The reports of the statisticians on the populations of the several federating colonies gives New South Wales 1,348,400, Victoria 1,162,000, Queensland 482,401, South Australia 370,700, and Tasmania 150, 300. This number gives a quota of 57,112 per member of the House. The statisticians thus apportion the representation of each colony : New South Wales 23 members, Victoria 20, Queensland 8, South Australia 6, and Tasmania 5. Victoria has already acquiesced in the report, and as soon as the other Premiers have done so the document will be forwarded to Mr Chamberlain. (Received Feb. 27, 9.45 a.m.) Fed. 27.— The Minister for Agriculture is communicating with the New Zealand Government to see if grapes cannot be admitted into New Zealand under proper precautions. MELBOURNE, Feb. 27. Simpson's furniture warehouse, and two other buildings in North Melbourne, wore destroyed by fire. The damage amounted to £6000.
