The pontingent will consist, as before, of major in command, two captains, six lieutenants, and 204 non-commissioned officers and men, all mouuted infantry In addition two lieutenants and 30 men will be required lor the machine gun detachment. Enough offers have been received in Wellington alone to fill the ■ lisle, and 68 offers are pouring in from outside, J,be conditions have been made ;. ■ even more stringent than before. The contingent will be confined, if possible, to volunteer forces, and no married man will be accepted. The Westland Rifles have volunteered in a body for active service in the Transvaal, apart from the contingeat. The HotchkißS gun detachment will require forty horses and thirty men. The Governor has communicated with the cap- ■ tain of H.M.S. Tauranga asking him to allow an expert to take up his quartern in the camp as instructor to the Hotchkiss detachment. Mr G. G. Stead has sent the following - . telegram to the Press Association : " Sotne ■:■■ . of the beßt and bravest of our young men are offering their lives to assiat our kin in South Africa. Captain Cradock, late of the 6th Dragoon Guards, has volunteered for service in command of the second New Zealand contingent. He is an experienced cavalry officer.
