. [Br Cable.] Albany, Dec. 18. After the disaster of Nicholson's Nek, General White wired to his wife : "Am safe but sad." Father Matthews, who was present at the disaster states the Irish Fusiliers bemoaned their misfortune, aud deolared they would rather have been shot. He also states tbat the Boers sent a number of empty trucks into Natal in readiness to oonrey the Ladysroith garrison into Pretoria, anticipating its surrender. It is calculated that during the big battle at Ladysmith the Boers fired twenty thousand rounds of ammuuition for each man hit, artillery included.
