GISBORNE V. RANGINUI. The first match of the first round for the Saturday Challenge Shield was played between Gisborne and Ranginui at Te Hapara last Saturday and resulted in a win [or Giaborne on the hrst innings by 80 runs. The Gisborne skipper won the toss aud decided to bat. Massey and Dodd opened to the bowling of J. Gibsou and P. Parker. Both men played steady cricket till tho score reached 13, when Dodd was clean bowled by J. Gibson for 7. Parrifi followed but did not Btay long, and after making 3 was bowled by the same bowler. Rees came next, but lost sight of the ball and his stumps were scattered, this being the third wicket taken by Gtbaon, who was bowling well. Things did not look too bright for Gisborne, three good wickets down for 17, but the captain, who was not out and playing a good defence, was joined by Hussey, and the two showing some good cricket carried the score to 68, when Massey drew an oft' ball from G. Johnstone on to the wicket, ant) retired for HO. Maßsey played a nice, patient game for his runs. Bods followed, but was bowled without snoring. Cole was nnxt and shared the same fate as the previovs man, being cleaned bowled by Johnstone ; the total was still OS. McCredie came in determined to make runs, and started well, but had the misfortune to got out l.b.w. for 4. Hnsscy, who was now playing a dashing game, being joined by Cuthbert, carried the total to 100, when the innings was declared closed with seven wickets clown. Hussey not out 41, Cuthbert not out 1. The former played a splendid game, hitting well all round tho wicket. G. Johnstone, 3 for 20, and J. Gibson, 4 for 20, bowled well. With a little over the hour to bat Ranginui opened with R. and F. Parker to tho bowling of Parrie and Rees. R. Parker started well, making two very fine hits, but was caught out in attempting a big hit for G. This was top score. The other batsmen did not show any form, with the exception of Hirine, who made his first appearance on Te Hapara ground, and no doubt with coaching would make a good bat. He made some very good strokes when batting and stood up to the bowling J with gloat confidence. The innings closed ' I for 20 runs, Gisborne thus v inning by 80 runs. Bowling analysis: Rees G for 11, Parrie 4 for 6. The next match of the first round will ba played at Te Arai on Thursday between (iisborne and Te Arai, commencing at 10.30 a.m. sharp.
