THS SOUDAN.
Electric Telegraph Copyright-United Prc;s Associatiiu, London. Jan. 22. Sir Herbert Kitchener has been gazetted Governor-General of the Soudan. The Paris correspondent of the Times states that M. Constans, the French Ambassador in Constantinople, has been instructed to induce the Sultan to join Russia and France in re-opening the whole Egyptian question. Paris, Jan 22. The Figaro says that Egypt may be. regarded a 8 quite British. Le Temps says the Anglo-Egyption Convention is an unreserved avowal of British protection and annexation of the Soudan. The same fate is awaiting Egypt. France must claim for compensation. The French moderate press discuss the new Anglo-Egyptian Convention in a not unfriendly spirit. They admit that the sacrifices made by Great Britain in the Soudan entitle her to the privileges she has been granted. The Chauvinist press indignantly complain that the Sultan's suzerainty has been ignored under the Convention. Bkru.v. Jan. 21. The German press, in consequence of the Convention having recognized the principle of an open door to trade- are entirely favorable to the Convention.
