THE GATTON MURDERS.

The police have good reason to believe that both the Hill aud Murphy crimes were the work of the same person or persons. , Sydney, Jan. 16. ' A resilient of Gatton at present on a visit to Syducy confirms the persistent rumors tli.it n. nameless outrage was committed (in Michael Murphy, showing the perpetrators were inflamed by diabolic instincts of revenge and bestiality. His opinion is that the police are no wiser aliout the crime than they weje twenty days ago. The Sydney Telegraph, referring to this case, says : — "In the Gatton case tho police have made an arrangement with the press which commends itself to public opinion by its good sense. At the same time, the arrangement was hardly necessary, for no newspaper is likely to sacrifice the cause of justice to the exigencies of journalism. Newspapers have often assisted justice materially. The leading case on ] this continent is that of Deeming, whose conviction was due to the energy and capacity of the Argus in the first instance. In England the Leftoy case is the one which stands prominent. It? was the publicity of details that led to the arrest of the criminal in that case. But there are many others in the record. On tho other hand, there is no instance in whioh the failure of justice has been imputed to the injudicious action of any newspaper."
