FIGURES WHICH SPEAK OF PROGRESS.
« — The following is a summary of the Savings Bank business transacted at Gisborne Post Office during the year 189S :— Deposits, £47,732 os2dj withdrawals, £40,182 0s 8d; and of interest added for year 1898 to accounts, £1378 Ss 9d. There were 2160 accounts open at the close of the year. On 31st December, 1898, the sum of £55,350 9s 4d was standiug to the credit of depositors, an increase | of £8928 12s 8d over last year. I To show the increase during ten years : in 1888 the deposits amounted to £13,612 5s 4d, and the withdrawals £13,921 1 Is Id. Five years ago the deposits amounted to £37,316 4s 7fl, withdrawals £33,964 19s 6d, and the amount to credit of depositors on 31st December, 1893, was £36,010 16s lid.
