PLAGUE IN INDIA.

" ' A plague riot occurred at Seringapatam ■ on November 18. A Times telegram from ■ Allahabad states that first of all an attempt ' to rescue the prisoners concerned in an ' earlier riot was made by 1000 Hindus and 1 Mohammedans of the fisherman class. ' Detachments of the Mysore State Cavalry ( and the Military Police faced the mob, \ ■who were armed with guns, swords, axes, • and other weapons. The police fired, kill- ' ing two and wounding several. The cavalry • charged themobwhodispersed temporarily, s carrying away their dead and wounded. Later on the rioters, reinforced to the ' number of 10,000 by contingents from > the villages, converged on Seringapatam, '• and made a desperate effort to enter the ' fort, to which the prisoners had been re- ' moved for greater safety. The crowd < , came by the north railway bridge towards the island, some attempting to swim the Kaveri river. The police fired, killing and ' wounding several, some of the rioters j dropping into the water. An hour later ' another large body of excited rioters j arrived from the Mysore side of Seringa- ' patam, and attempted to rush the bridge ' from the southern side, but they were effectually stopped liy the volleys from . the police, more beinfj killed and wounded ; on the bridge while attempting to cross ; the river.
