VICTORIA COLLEGE.

(Per Press Association.) Wellington, to-day. The Victoria College Council have appointed Mr J. Brown, of Glasgow, as Professor of Classics, and Mr R. c. McL.uirin, of St. John's College, Cambridge, as Professor of Mathematics. The latter is a brilliant Auckland boy of whose scholastic achievements so much has beeu heard lately. Mr T. H. Easterfield, M.A., of Cambridge, has been appointed Professor of Chemistry and Physics, and Mr H. McKenzie, M.A., of St. Andrew's, Professor of English Language and Literature. The latter is a brother of the Minister of Lands. The professors are all comparatively young, Mr McLaurin being only 28. Both lie and Mr Brown are M.A.s. There were some 160 applications in all, and the College Couijcil, after spending some days studying the testimonials and reports of educational experts at Home, sat till after midnight before finishing their labors. Following are the winners of the first set of scholarships offered by the Victoria College, the possible marks being 2000 : — Bertram Jacobs, Wellington, 1639 marks ; Clara Taylor, Stratford, 1576; Donald Hall, Wellington, 1564; Thomas Mitchell Stafford, Westland, 1561 ; Henry Mason ; VVellington, 1531 ; Frank Gamble, Wellington, 1477. There were 144 candidates.
