SHOCKING OUTRAGE.
[Per Pkess Association.] Masterton, to-day. The Masterton police have received information that an ontrage of a particularly bad character was committed at Opaki last night, on a girl of 17, and to-day they arrested a young man named Robert [Douglas, aged 19. The girl states that [ Douglas accosted her while she was riding, and on stopping she was dragged off her horse by the hair. She declares she fought furiously till her strength failed, but that the fellow effected his purpose, and she fainted. On recovering she found herself covered with fern. The girl was examined by Dr Hosking, and ample evidence was found to corroborate her story that someone had maltreated her. The clothing she had worn was also torn to pieces. Wellington, to-day. Douglas was committed to trial at Masterton.
