STORMS IN THE SOUTH.
« DAMAGE TO THE CROPS. CiißisTCHimcu, to-day. A heavy thunderstorm passed over the district south of Cliiistehureh last evening, and heavy rain fell in the city. Harvesting has been brought to a standstill. The nor'wester on Saturday did much more harm than was anticipated on lands where the grass was heavy and the straw long. Numbers of ripe paddocks were badly shaken. The damage is roughly estimated at from 15 to '20 bushels per acre. j Dusedin, to-day. A heavy hailstorm was experienced at 9.30 last night. Most damage was done al North East Valley, where the hailstones lay to a depth of five inches. .Most of the gardens were destroyed. One nurseryman in the west end of the city hail the whole of his orchard swept bare. He estimates his loss at over £300.
