AUSTRIAN IMMIGRANTS.

ONE HUNDRED MKN IN SYDNEY. WORK WAITING FOR THEM IN AUCKLAND. (Electric Telegraph- -Copyright— United Press Association.) Sydney, Jan. 0. The Austrian Consul at Auckland has informed Mr Lohmann, manager of the North German Lloyds Company, that he can find immediate employment for at least 100 Austrians. It is presumed that, as there are not more than So men here, possessing an average of £3 per head, that the objection of the New Zealand Government that these men are without means and would become a burden upon the colony is removed by the Consul's statement. Mr Lohmann states that, in the event of the Union Company not forwarding a satisfactory reply to the lawyer's letter by Tuesday evening in regard to the carriage of the men from Sydney, ho will proceed with an action against the Company for damages. (Received Jan. 10, 9.45 a.m.) Jan. 10.— The Sydney Morning Herald, referring to the action of the New South Wales Government in stating that the Austrians would have to sign a declaration under the New South Wales Act before being permitted to land, says this would make it appear as though the New South Wales officials are, by a strange extension of the privileges of the Council of Nations, to be set to work to give effect to an advanced labor measure passed by the New Zealand Parliament. The paper adds :" We were not before aware that this colony was specially desirous to exclude Austrians, or indeed any subjects of European nations from settling amongst us."
