ENGLAND AND FRANCE.

The newspaper Communique declares that France is willing to accept compensation for the cession of the French shore of Newfoundland. It declares that the .territory proposed to be ceded is a poor .fishing ground, but rich in minerals. Lo Matin suggests that the Channel Islands be ceded to France in exchange for Newfoundland. The suggestion has raised an indignant outcry from the Channel islanders. M. Delcasse says he feels the idea is Utopian, and would give England the pretext for a war. Le Debate and Le Eolaire accuse Great Britain of administering pin-pricks to France. Le Temps deprecates Anglo-French recrimination. The future, it says, must be faced, and the past furnishes lessons of guidance. The virulence of the British press shows a potentially disastrous state of mind. . Jan. 8. — An official communication has neen published by the French press which declares that France is willing to accept adequate compensation . for the French shore of Newfoundland. London, Jan. 7. 'The Standard states that Great Britain is probably willing to compensate France by the cession of West African territory. Jan. 8, — The Westminster Gazette says trade rights in Madagascar must be considered as part of a comprehensive settlement of accounts. The St. James' Gazette states that it would be folly to allow French protectorates over the regions now open to trade. Baron Cromer's speech was not commented, on in Paris. It is believed that M. Dupuy, the Premier, silenced the press. The Observer suggests that an AngloFrench Committee of Jurists should settle the Nile region boundaries, and the Madagascar, Newfoundland, and Congo difficulties.
