• MAN ARRESTED ON SUSPICION. (Electric Telegraph— Copyright— United Press Association.) Brisbane, Jan. 8. A man Darned Burgess, only recently discharged from gaol, attempted to commit a criminal assault on the hoy Hill, who was the victim of an unnatural offence prior to his murder. A man wanted tor a similar offence at Ipswich is suspected of shooting the boy and his horse. It is suggested that there is a connection of this ease with the Gatton murder, but the police believe they are entirely distinct. Richard Burgess, aged sixty, has been arrested at Naldy, charged with complicity in the Gatton minders. He was remanded for eight days. He offered a desperate resistance, and it took four policemen to secure him. He was making across country, f\nd refused to give an account of himself and his doings during the Christmas holidays. The fragments of a letter found by McNeill near Gatton, have been satisfactorily explained. Some pieces of dress material bearing bloody finger marks, have been found hidden in the bushes four miles north of the scone of the tragedy. The policehavebeen further strengthened and a contingent told off to thoroughly search in different suctions of the district. (Received Jan 9, 9.30 a.m.) Jan. 9.— The man arrested at'Naldy has scratches on his face, and his clothing is bloodstained. The post mortem showed that a bullet entered Hill's head just above the eyebrows, and emerged at the back. The suspected man is Believed to have left for the southern colonies. The police of the vicinity were at Mundah at the time of the tragedy. Latest mail news about the Gatton traged3 r states : — Gatton, Dec. 31. — The police are being added to almost hourly. By goods train early this morning from Brisbane four fresh mounted men arrived. All are well armed with revolvers and carbines, as it is expected when the culprits are brought to bay they will make a fight for it. As a result of the boiling-down of the horse, the bullet with which it was shot has been discovered. The townspeople con discuss nothing but the outrage. »If the murderers were arrested and Drought into Gatton now, while the excitement is at fever heat, the police would have all they could do to protect them and prevent their being summarily dealt with by the residents. The idea that the outrage was committed by persons who are well acquainted with the country is growing, and the general opinion now is that the murderers will be found not far from Gatton. The township presents much the appearance of. a military camp. With the delay in the capture of the murderers the gloom which has been cast over the community deepens. The outrage is generally acknowledged to be one of the most horrible crimes ever committed in Australia.
