FREEZING WORKS' LEASE.
(To tue Editoh or tub Herald.)
■Sik, — At the last meeting of the Harbor Board it was proposed that a lease of the freezing works be extended to 21 years. It is my opinion that (1) the Board has no power, statutory or otherwise, to grant uny lease cither for years or any term for any such purpose ; (2) 'if tho Board had a right to grant a lease, there are very grave objections against it, as it might in the future interfere with essentials and details that would not only render it necessary, hut imperative that the Board resume control," that possibly might place the Harbor Board in the position of having to give the Freezing Works Co. a few thousands compensation
at the expense of tho ratepayer ; (3) it is a contravention of the law to allow any abattoirs, slaughterhouses, or other building's which may create a nuisance within the precincts of the borough. Let the Freezing Works Co. be content with the advantages accorded them, and not try to overreach the ratepayers by any action, illegal or otherwise, that the ratepayers do not approve of. J. Sandlant.
