CORRESPONDENCE.

THE FISHING INDUSTRY.

(To the Editor of the Hmiaid.)

Sir, — The long proposed question of as to whether we are to have a regularly established fishing scheme for the supply of an almost necessary food is rapidly approaching a head, as several gentlemen have signified their willingness to subset ibc towards the purchase of all the necessary impedimenta. The affair will virtually be on the basis of a joint stock company — any profits arising to be proportionately divided after the deduction of all necessary expenses amongst those who have advanced money for the preliminary outlay. What it is estimated would bo required is a small steamer, and this would have to be purchased outright, as leasing would of necessity considerably eat into the profits to be divided. This would also under the recent laws entail the employment of an engineer, but here the wages bill would cease, as the men engaged in fishing would form the crew, their payment being resultant on the success obtained. There is absolutely no scarcity of iisli outside the bay, tho only difficulty being in having a vessel enabled to reach the best grounds in all weathers, and to return when desired, thus almost guaranteeing a supply of fresh fish daily. At present with small sailing boats this is not assured, and the public in consequence have either to pay a prohibitive price for fish, or abstain almost altogether from that most excellent article of diet. It is to be hoped that others will come forward and signify their willingness to join in a° venture which will be a public benefit, as well as tv remunerative speculation. Those willing to take part in the enterprise can communicate with Alfred Leuoeu, Fisherman.
