EDUCATION BOARD.

Napier, last night. The Hawke's Bay Education Board met to-day, the Hon. Mr Ormond in the chair. Mataw hero asked whether the Roman Catholic priest could have the use of the schoolroom for religious instruction. — Reply : Yes. An application from the same for L 4 17s 6d spent by them, was referred to Mr Quigley to report. Wanganui Education Board is to be furnished with particulars in reference to the Glsborne district high school. Mr Crawford's appointment as master I ab Te Arai was approved. A letter was received from Mr W. E. Combs, of Danevirke, relinquishing a scholarship of his son at Gisborne owing to the expense of boarding. He could not refrain from suggesting to the Board the advisability of cancelling their absurd regulation No. 3, which "offered a premium to trickery, and penalises those who, like myself, desire to do the best they can for their children."— Letter received. The Apparatus Committee again oalled the attention of the Board to the requests from the School Committees for apparatus j which had been declared by the Board to be unnecessary. The committee recommended that Mr Hill be required to abstain from making recommendations of apparatus to school committees without having previously obtained the Board's consent to recommend the same. — Approved. Letters were received from Hastings, Gisborne, Havelock, Kaikora, Makaretu, Meanee, Patangata, Petane, Waipukurau, Takapau, Tiniroto, and Waipawa asking that the mid winter holidays be postponed.

The secretary was instructed to interview the Inspector to find out what days the examinations of different schools take place. All schools examined between the present date and August 15th can have holidays after, but not other schools. The Teachers' Selection Committee laid on the table a report re the teachers staff regulations, recommending readjustment of salaries in certain cases where some were too high and others too low, but these regulations will not affect the positions of present teachers.
