News has been received from Kotorua that the Uriwera Natives near Te Pounamu have temporarily stopped Mr Turner'B survey of a portion of the new road from Ruatahuna to Lake Waikaretnoana, the protest being that the road would ■ destroy part of the forest. The difficulty is expected to be settled by the officer in charge. The young man Sykes, who was injured in the abdomon during a football match last Saturday, lias died from paralysis of tho bowels and peritonilis. Before death he exonerated anyone from blame, and at the inquest a verdict was returned accordingly. At the Supreme Court a. divorce action was brought by W. B. Howard against Annie Howard (respondent) and William VVhitely for a decree nisi of dissolution of marriage, on the grounds of adultery. Judge Conolly dismissed the case against Whitely. The petition was also dismissed, and the Judge granted co-respondent his costs. At the Police Court Morris Lewis Ornstein was remanded to Wellington on the charge that, being a bankrupt he did, within two years prior to petition to be adjudged bankrupt, fraudulently remove part of his property over the value of £10. A cablegram has been received from London asking the directors of the Balfour mine to quote a cash price for the company's property. The directors placed the property under offer. Mr R. Hunt, colonial representative of the New Zealand Exploration Company, has received a oablegram from London that the Grown and Earl of Glasgow properties at Karangahake have been amalgamated. The following offer has been accepted for the purchase of the Kapai Vermont property :— Vendors to receive £34,000 cash certain, with the option of an additional £34,000 cash or 34,000 fully paidup shares within 40 days, as the buyers elect. If the property is purchased straight out the shareholders will receive about 14s 4d per share. NAPIER, To-day. At the Supreme Court two jockeys named Frederiok Power and Alfred Petereen were acquitted on a charge of robbery from the person with violence. John Brown, alias Bennett, pleaded guilty to a charge of larceny, and was sentenced to six months' imprisonment, Peter Christian Merohelson, for stealing a bioycle, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment. John Cameron, for horse stealing, was remanded for sentence. A four-roomed house at Hastings, owned and occupied by George Hayes, was totally destroyed by fire this morning. The outbreak was discovered by Mrs Hayus at 3.30, and the inmates barely escaped with- th6ir lives. Mr Brunton, a neighbor of Hayea', received rather severe injuries while endeavoring to remove furniture. The cottage was insured for ifilfiO in the New Zealand, the same Company holding a risk of £50 on the furniture.

At the Supreme Court Isaac Ambrose pleaded guilty to obtaining money under false pretences. He was courting a girl at Danevirke, and wrote to her saying he was ill and in want of money. She borrowed £10 to send to him, with whioh he took a trip with another girl. He was sentenced to six months' imprisonment. CHRISTOHURCH, To-day. While H.M.S. Rapid was being towed from Wellington to Lyttelton on Monday night, an A.B. named Hope, 21 years of age, who was on the top-gallant yard reefing sail, lost his footiDg and fell to the deck. He was unconscious when picked up, and died twenty minutes' afterwards. STRATFORD, To-day. Mr MoGuivo has addressed the eltotors of Egment. Ihe address was similar to that of Kir Robert Stout, Dr Newman, and JMr Dulhie. He condemned the Government administration generally, while approving nf a number of mnasnres introduced. He spoke strongly against their special settlement and land policy. He said he stood at the last election aq an independent candidate. The position was no longer tenable, and he now was a pronounced oppositionist. A vote of thanks and confidence was declared carried.
