LOCAL WANTS.

(To the Editor op the Hebald.) Sir, — Mr Carroll, in his defence re Ministers gadding about the country, said ib was right in order to find out local wants. Well a Minister came to Ormond and found out it wanted Marshlands, nay more, Poverty Bay wanted it. There was a golden opportunity ; it was badly bungled. The public blame the Minister ; Mr Carroll says it was not his fault ; then it was either the Board, the valuator, or the Act. If they are all incompetent and impotent, it is the Government who made the Act, and we must do better. Mr Carroll snubbed the localites by telling them that if the recent Government purohase was too poor for them, better men would be found. Ormond treated it with Bilent contempt for the time being. Practical men here know the value of land, and the sequel will be that new-comers will go on the land and make half a living, the rest will have to be made by taking ocal works at starv ation prices to the unemployed. Mr Carroll said ho used his best endeavor in the interest of the local want. Well we must find some one with more energy and more force of character, and not add injury to insult. Mr Carroll asserted M.H.R.'s were paid more in proportion than Ministers. Liberals raised the honorarium. The Uriwera picnic allowed L3O to Ministers, and Ll2O went in creature comforts, etc. The papers say the Premier has accepted a sprat of LISOO from a foreign syndicate to monopolise the mining industry. The publication of the Colonial Batik business points to highly colored liberality. Truly, in our instance, a liberal Government does not extend beyond the Ministry. The Premier is reported to have said, "These things will not be tolerated much longer." Is it the hand-writing on the wall 1 At last the dumb ass spake and forbad the madness of the prophet. Time will poll it. Obmond Socjal.
