WELLINGTON, To-day. During the last few days the Premier has had under consideration a new scale of pay for the police force, permanent artillery, and torpedo corps. Drafts have been approved and will be submitted to Cabinet at next meeting. The Highbank estate at Rakaia (36 miles from Christcburch by rail) haß been acquired by Government under the Land for Settlement Act, and also nine thousand acres which is admirably adapted for small settlement.

Mr Hales, Engineer-in-Chief, and Captain AHm&D, nautical adviser to the Government, left in the Hinemoa last night for the Snares to survey a site for the proposed lighthouse. The Weatport Coal Company has chartered the barque Coromandel, now on her way from Newcastle to Wellington, to load coals at Valparaiso, for orders. This will bo the first vessel despatched from a New Zealand port to South America with a coal cargo. By a fire in the stables of the Tauhernikau hotel, near Featherston, the racehorses Ruby and Longwood were burned to death. Sir Patrick Buckley took his seat for the first time in his judicial capacity this morning, when he presided over sittings in Chambers.

DUNEDIN, To-day. The directors of the Weatport Coal Company recommend the payment of a dividend of 3J per cent, for the past half year, making 6 per cent, for the year.

CHRISTCHURCH, Last night. A man named John Bullen, who is employed as night engineer at the Belfast Freezing Works, wqb found this morning hung acroaa the engine, dead. His right hand had caught in the machinery while in the act of oiling the engine, and the body had been dragged round the shaft. The deceased was aged 26, and has a wife and three children in Dunedin.
