SECOND DAY.

The second and' concluding day's racing is ■ v taking place this afternoon at Te Hapara. .Fine weather again favored the gathering, but; a strong wind blowing, with clouds of 'du»t, tends to make things a bit uncomfortable for those present. The attendance is •equal to. that of yesterday, and the money feeing "rung on " the totahsator promises to be quits* up to the first day's total, if not more. The. officials aro again all in their respective positions, and are giving the same satisfaction as characterised their previous r efforts. Captain Winter, with the new starting machine, is sending the fields away on even terms, and the racing, at the time of writing, is proving highly interesting. The Whataupoko Band is again ia atteuance, and is enlivening the proceedings . -considerably with choice selections. Proceedings commenced with the County Stakes, for which six were saddled up, Hopgarden being installed a hot favorite. Mr Clark's gelding fully justified the confidence placed in him, for almost from the fall of tho barrier be was in front, and won with ridiculous ease. • The Hack Race again proved that Mr Hamon possesses a filly above tho ordinary in Huna, who won in very easy style from Avis, cutting out the mile in lmin 4<isecs. This makes the fourth successive win of the filly. A field of five went to the post for the Stewards' Handicap, Retribution being reserved for the Grandstand Handicap. Sequ.^h was a warm favorite, but during the ra.ie went wrong, and pulled up at the finish, very lame. Forella led from start to finish, and rewarded her supporters with a nice dividend of £8 os. Next came the big Hut dies, only thtae being pulled out to contest this event. Yesterwinner,. Hopgarden, was withdrawn. betting race resulted, Donald McKinnon and Disturbance running very close for the position of favorite, the latter having £4 more invested on him than Donald . McKinnou. The race resolved itself prac- . . tically into a contest between the two favorites, but Disturbance, going to the front from the fall of the barrier, was never headed, and won comfortably at the finish. The Haok Hurdles drew out a field of six, and a very pretty race ensued. Deceiver started a slightly better favorite than Miss Bevan, but the top-weight was never in the hunt, and was in the rear rank all the way. When Sam looked all over a winner, Ashdown, on Cynosure, challenged him, and the son of Daniel O'Rourke, running as straight aa an arrow, passed the leader and won by half-a*length. The win was a most popular ■ '«ne, and there can be no doubt that the good riding of Ashdown enabled Cynosure to eecure the victory. The following results have reached us up ,to the time of^going to press :— ; Codkto Stakes, of 40 soys, second horse to receive 5 soys from stake. For all horses . bred in the Counties of Cook and ' • Waiapu. All the horses got well away with the exception of Derby, who hung at the post, and lost several lengths. Zillah. was quiekesb in her stride, and led for a hundred yards or so, but Hopgarden then went to the front, and led Zillah by a couple of lengths ab the back, where Derby ran up into third position, with Wool Queen laßt. The race from this point needs no i description, as Hopgarden^ iaoreaßed his lead, and never giving his opponents a chance, won comfortably by three lengths. £332 on machine, dividend £2 14s. Paki Paki, nearest the rails, made the tunning at the start, followed by Orizaba and Jewel, with Huna next, and Avis last. At the back Orizaba and .Paki Paki were running close together, and a little further on Huna made a move forward, as did Jewel, with Avis still last. Nearing the sbraighb the blue colors of the favorite shot to the front, whilst Avis had also closed up. The latter made his effort in the straight, and came very fast, but was unable to get on terms with the favorite, who won easily by a clear length. .6385 on totalisator, dividend £2 4s. Retribution was scratched. The Napier horse Sequah was made a hot favorite, with Hopmarket next in demand. Forella, on the rails, was the quickest in his strides from an excellent start, and at thn back of the course was a clear length ahead of Sequah and Hopmarket, with Booby next, and Glauvena a couple of lengths away last. Three furlongs from home Mr Harper's horse was still sailing along in front, and as they neared the bend the field were all well together with the exception of Glauvena, who was apparently beaten. Forella led into the straight, and though Hopmarket and Booby came fast at the finish, they were unable to get on terms with the leader, who won by a bare half length. The three were despatched to an excellent start, Tally-ho being the first to show in front. The first obstacle was negotiated by Tally-ho and Disturbance, both together, with Donald McKinnon a length away. Disturbance soon set several lengths between- himself and Tally-ho, but passing the stand was only a couple of lengths to the good, Donald McKinnon still lying last. At tho back Tally-ho and Donald closed up, but not for long, as the leader went away again, and led into the straight, where Donald McKinnon went all he knew to catch the leader, but his exertions were of no avail, as Disturbance more than held his own, and won by a couple of lengths. £390 on machine. Dividend, £2 ss. Time, 3min 27secs. Second Hack Hurdles, of 16 soys ; 1J I . miles. 53 Mr Hepburn's b g Cynosure, by Daniel O'Bourke, 10-10 (Ashdown) 1 39 Mr G. A good start was effected, but Cynosure got under . way very smartly, and soon held a length's advantage. At the first hurdle Sam went to the front, and passing the stand was half-a-length ahead of Miss Bevan, with Cynoßure next. At the back of the course Sam still led, but Craigard ran past him and led by a, neck. Not for long, however, as Sam agaiii took command, and Cynosure ran up to him. At the second to last hurdle Sam held a clear lead of a length, and the race looked all over, especially when the son of Morpheus kept his lead into the straight and over the last hurdle. Ashdown here brought his mount along, and riding all he knew, wore down the leader and won by about half-a-length. £332 on totalisator, div. £5 12s. Time, 2min 59sec. !
