The Unemployed Question.
Christchubch, to-day. A deputation of local bodies waited on the Premier re the unemployed.-. After its mem- -- bers had said what they thought .would relieve the distress, Mr Seddon made a long reply, in the course of which he stated that \ the local bodies had a duty to perform in assisting the unemployed, else why did they - acoept subsidies on rates, charitable aid contributions, etc. So far as the law. allowed and finances permitted Government would do its best, as it had been doing, he asserted, in its co-operative works, alternative system^^p^ and purchase of private and Native landa?^^^
