The Committee appointed by Great Britain, Germany, and America to consider land claims in Samoa recognise most of the German claims, and largely curtail those of Great Britain and America. The best of the land has been allotted to the Germans. A syndicate was arranging for the purchase of the racehorse Carbine when the Duke of Portland stepped in and purchased Ihe Musket — Mersey horse over their heads. Inteuse cold is being txpetienced in England, and in parts of the Midlands. The thermometer is six degrees below zero. The Wailn Silverlon Mining Company, of New Zealand, has extended its capital to £60,000, and the £10,000 offered to the public has been subscribed twofold. Feb. 7.— Bolckow, Vaughan and Co. /are the successful tenderers for 25,000 tons of steel for Western Australia. The price is extremely low. . Doctor Percival, master of Rugby, has been appointed Bishop of Hereford. WASHINGTON, Feb. 7. It is reported that a syndicate, including the Rothschilds, Morgans, and Behnonts, will take up the whole of the American bond issue. Mr Bland -will introduce in the House a Free, Silver Coinage Bill as a substitute for the Bond Bill.
