[Br Telegbaph.— Press Association,] WELLINGTON, To-day. The dairy produce shipped home by the "Rimutaka at this port consisted of 317 tons of butter and 3S tons of cheese. The Auckland and Wellington portions comprised 4G and 51 tons respectively, making a total of 452 tons from the colony. The Times estimates that from the returns of receipts and expenditure for the nine months of the present financial year there will be a surplus of between and £290,000 ou March 31." A Cabinet meeting was held yesterday, j all members of the Government being present except Mr Carroll, who returns from North on Monday. Several important questions, including the appointment of Railway Commissioners, and the desirability Of making fresh calls to the Legislative Council were discussed, but no decision arrired at pending the arrival of Mr Carroll. A full meeting will be held on Monday, when it is expected some of the larger policy questions will be finally disposed of. Arrived : s.s. Maori from Napier. It is authoritatively announced that the National Bank is about to transfer its New Zealand headquarters to Wellington. Coates, the general manager, who has just returned from England, states that most favorable opinions are expressed on all sides of the position and prospects of the colony. Messrs Mair and Hamlin, Maori interpreters in the House of Representatives, have received notice of the termination of their engagements on March 31. The ss. Ohau has been chartered for Chathams to bring away a load of wool. The Kiwi and Kahu have both gone away on the same purpose. A return of the land taken up since April shows that 1554 selectors have taken up 265,677 acres in Otago and Canterburj\ Lease in perpetuity is most in favor, but in Auckland it is occupation with right of purchase. Some 490 selectors Have taken up 25,844 acres for cash, 348 took 79,705 acres with right of purchase, and 716 took up 160,128 under perpetual lease. The figures show an advance on last year.
