Defeat of Justice
Wellington, to-day. In the Supreme Court to-day the second trial of Caroline McGovern, a married woman, charged with performing an illegal operation on a girl named Isabel Guinao, was begun. The girl Guinan, the first witness" culled, declined to give evidence, notwithstanding that a nolle prosequi had been entered on the chareje against her last week. The reason was that it was still open for the Crown to charge her as an accomp* plioe. The Chief Justice said that there was no precedent by which he could compel her to give evidence, and as Guinan objected to her doctor giving evidence, His Honor said this cut out all corroborative evidence, and it was no use proceeding with the case. The Crown thereupon offered no evidence, and he woman was discharged.
