Postal Returns.

Ths postal revenue for the year amounted to £320,000, being £51,000 in excess of expenditure, and a decrease of £15,000 as against the previous year's revenue. 23,745,402 letters wtre posted and 23,867,402 delivered, an increase of two and a quarter and one and a-half millions respectively. Inland parcels increased 39,000, the total being 157,000. Telegrams numbered close on two millions, being an increase of seven thousand. Money orders represented 651,000 issued and £582,000. Fifty-five post offices were established, five re-cpeuerl, and sixteen closed during tyc year. The number of post offices open at the close of the year was 1,231. Money orders representing £147,155 were issued on offices beyond the colony as against £129,109 in the previous year. Orders issued beyond the colony on New Zealand amounted to £77,219, as against £75,865 in the previous year. The amount of deposits received during the year by the Post Office Savings Bank was £1,842,987 ; withdrawals, £1,693,515; being a steady increase compared with the previous year.

Post Office orders, bank drafts and notes cheques, promissory notes, coin, and so on of a total value of £0,512 18s 6d were found in letters opened in the Dead Letter Office of this colony during the past year. Other articles included an aneroid barometer, a gold watch and chain, a silver watcli and chain, two silver watches, three gold rings, and other jewellery. There were 890 im : claimed registered letters, 214 letters without addresses, 481 letters imperfectly addressed, and twelve letters with libellous addresses were intercepted.
