BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The. Borough Council met last evening, , when there were present : The Mayor, and Crs. Dunlop, Lewis, Lucas, Whinray, < Harding, Taylor, and Townley. 1 The Overseer reported : " Owing to the j late rain, I have not been able to finish ( tarring the footpaths. One day more will 1 complete. the work. — During the last forfc- , night I have had the floor of the.. Engine , Shed asphalted. Mr Townley thought this advisable, there being a lot of valu- < able machinery standing on damp ground , and having most of the material on hand. , The work cost L 8 Is 2d, including tarl — , Mr Sawyer has about 15 yards of river j gravel on hand at 5s per yard. It will be * well to purchase it for ordinary repairs to 1 Aberdeen Road. — I would ask the Council \ that the first work undertaken after the 31st of March be the screwing up of the swings of the Taruheru and Turanganui bridges. — Tenders can be called, "to be in ' by next meeting, for cleaning out all the outlet drains. This is usually done in ' March. — Day labor : L 5 17s 3d." It was agreed that the gravel be pur- . chased ; that the screwing up of the two bridges, estimated to cost Lls. be done ; ' and that tenders be called for cleaning the . outlet drains. The Mayor reported for the committee j who had interviewed Ministers that they \ had met with a iavorable reception. The poundkeeper reported : * * Since the Recreation ground has been let for graz- ] ing I have received Ll2 Is 6d, which I * have paid to the Town Clerk ; 9s is owing. " The following payments were made : — Rent Lls, petty cash Ll2 18s 3d, W. O. Skeet L 5, J. Drummond LlO, Gas L 2 17s ' Bd, Bridges L 2 7s Bd, Kennedy and ( Evans LI 12s 6d, Wingate, Burns and Co. j LI 5s 2d, G. Grant L 3 3s, G. Reed L2 l4s } 3d, Clements L 2 5s Od. , J The Clerk announced that he had re- ' ceived a communication from Mr H. J. c Gilberd offering terms to sink an artesian r well, but Mr Gilberd did not desire to c have his offer made public. — Cr Lucas ' opposed any discussions on the subject at all, because they had a committee dealing J with a scheme, and said he was strongly c opposed to any further expenditure on ? artesian wells. It was simply entering a ' lottery for water. — Cr Townley instanced ( the long time spent in boring for water in ; Napier and the ultimate great success. - ] It was agreed (Cr Lucas dissenting) that * the Council go into committee to discuss 1 Mr Gilberd's letter.
