Charles Leslie, alias Lesurer, alias Win. Thomson, was arrested to-day by Detective Madder, charged with stealing 40 sovereigns from Chas. Wilson at Dunedin on Friday last. The prisoner had 28 sovereigns on him and his portmanteau is on the Mararoa, by which he intended leaving for Melbourne. He is believed to he a Melbourne spieler attracted by the Exhibition.

GREYMOUTH, last nioht.

A fire occurred this morning in Boundary street, several houses being destroyed, but the damage was confined at ono side by the Argus oflice, and on the other side by Hannah's boot shop. The following buildings were destroyed : — Bisch, jeweller and watchmaker's shop ; Butler, Commercial Hotel, a two storey building ; North's fancy good storo ; Heley's, drapery ; Dons, bootmaker ; Dacheah, pawnbroker and jeweller ; Brimblc, tinsmith ; and Thomas Garth, tobacconist. Very little was saved from any of the places, and most have lost all. The Commercial was insured for L6OO and the furniture for L3OO. Other insurances are not yet ascertained.

AUCKLAND, To-day

The first wool sales of the season forthe Auckland district was held yesterday. There was a large attendance of buyers, larger, in fact, than for ten years >ast, and the competition was keen. The -ices realised were very satisfactory, and an indication generally of a rise of about ld per lb in wool. The prices ranged as follows : — Longwools 7tl to 7£d, half-bretls 8d to Bgd, merinos 9d to 9|d. Mr John Deasy has left for Sydney. In reply to an application made to him, Mr Humphreys, Commissioner for Crown Lands, stated that no persons except four who had permission, will be allowed to enter Puhipuhi for minerals. The preservation of the timber was a great consideration, and the Government required a larger ancl more satisfactory test before gazetting the field. This decision has not been received with satisfaction.

The failure of Tonks and Co. is attributed principally to the very high rental of business premises, which was leased for 27 years for LllOO per aninin, not including rates. Tlie Rotomahana, which left yesterday, took a shipment of 350 sucks of maize from Auckland to Sydney.

HOKITIKA, To-day

Mr Dillon addressed crowded meetings at Kumara on Tuesday night, and Hokitika last night. The total receipts for both places are about L 420.

Thos. Jamieson, an employee of the Commercial Trust and Loan Company, was fined L 2 and costs for failing to allow the prosecutor to see tho register. On a similar charge tlie directors were fined Is and costs.

Another lire was discovered at the General Post Ottico buildings between 3 and 4 yesterday morning. The nightwatchman discovered one of the spittoons in the instrument room in a smouldering state and extinguished tho fire by dashing a couple of buckets of water upon it. He then found that a lighted cigarette had been thrown into the spittoon, wliich was of wood, and that the sawdust in the vessel had been burned and the whole framework had been charred. The officers of the department are reticent in the matter, which will be subjected to an official enquiry. Mrs G. F. Richardson is lying dangerously ill and the Hon. Mr Richardson has been telegraphed for.
