In reference to the loan conversion scheme, alluded to in the cable news, the Post states that it is simply the maturing of arrangements which have been in preparation for sometime past. The two 5 per cent, loans, amounting together to about LJ.,(500,000, are just about falling due. It lias been arranged that they shall be converted into new 3^ per cent, issue. The Bank of England "has undertaken to float the new loan at 97, but. a private letter received by Dr Newman from a member of the Legislature who is now in London, states that it is believed it will go oft' at more than par. Judging from the feeling about tho colony, the stock conversion will result in a clear saving to tho colony of about L24,(K)0 a year, and other loans will mature in the course of the next two or three years, which can be similarly operated upon.

As the efforts made on Thursday evening to float the s.s. Huia, which grounded in the Manawatu river on Wednesday, were unsuccessful, Captain Bendall, Marine Surveyor to the Underwriters' Association, left for the scene by yesterday afternoon's train in order to superintend operations.
